It has truly been a great first step on the road of a fully integrated and unified bowls tournament. Although I should like to have seen more women entered there was nevertheless a significant number of them and they provided a really competitive and friendly atmosphere to the event. There was no bad feeling or niggles between the genders and everyone just got down to what they were supposed to do and that was .... bowl ! All the worries we had harboured before the event were dispelled and over the fortnight we heard many, many comments about the friendliness and comradeship between the sexes and how in 2010 a lot more entries would be flooding in because of the good beginnings. We hope that is true and a lot more bowlers will take the plunge and join the rest of us in another memorable two weeks of good bowls, good play, good company and well........... good everything !!

In the first week the fours and pairs were played and for the record the last woman standing (for those that care about these things) was Fran Exton from Surrey who partnered her other half John in the pairs event. They survived to the quarter finals before losing out.

The Pairs event was eventually won by the Snook brothers Gary and Adrian from Milton Park and College Park BC’s respectively. They beat Chris Jones and Peter Hamilton from Epsom Parks BC, Surrey. Special thanks to FA Holland & Son who sponsored this event exclusively and provided as usual their very high standard of sponsorial support over the fortnight. Cherry Ward the Principal Director was as industrious as ever to ensure her company received maximum exposure for their investment and we think she not only succeeded in achieving that end but placed herself and F.A. Holland & Son firmly in the consciousness of everyone who came into Beach House Park over the course of the tournament. Well done Cherry and thank you and F.A. Holland & Son once again for your fabulous support.

The fours event was won by that veteran (sorry Peter) master bowler Peter Lines who had in his team Malcolm Dare, Rex Moore and Rod Boyce. They prevailed in the final over a Middlesex four skipped by Ernie Rudston with J. Sinclair, R. Smith and D. Crudgington and all from Bush Hill Park.

The Triples was won by David Hubbard, Marc Duson and David Cornwell who beat the Southey team of Steve Wessier, Ray Carey and Nathan Beeson in a late finishing (7.30pm) final 19-14.

The blue ribbon event ..... The Worthing Unified Singles Championship was won by the Southey player Nathan Beeson who sustained his game long enough to overcome local Mackie bowler David Moses who had enjoyed a fantastic week of ever increasing bowls mastery to stake his place in the final. The winning scoreline was 21 - 12 but belied the high standard of play from both competitors. Nathan took away the Singles title and a cheque for £1,500.00, thought to be the highest purse of any open bowls tournament in the country ! Dave Moses won £600.00 as losing finalist and a solid silver Trophy for his efforts.

So a very well done to each and every competitor who entered. Thank you to all those that helped to make the first fully “Unified Bowls Tournament” a spectacular success and launch it onto the bowls scene. Thanks to all our sponsors and advertisers who invested in the tournament and helped make it such a fantastic event. Special thanks to Worthing Borough Council, Continental Landscapes Limited and Bowls England for their support.

We never found out who the anonymous sponsor of the Unified Tournament lapel badges was but whoever it was we thank you for your support. Every badge sold was thus pure profit for the tournament funds and we are truly grateful for your magnificent gesture.

The 2010 Unified Open Bowls Tournament is scheduled to be staged between Monday 30th August and Saturday 12th September, 2010 following on as it usually does on the heels of The National Finals.

As most of you know we have stated that we’re standing down after nearly six years organising Worthing Open Bowls Tournaments and the event is seeking interested parties to take it on. Everything is in our view in place and ready to go and the tournament can only go from strength to strength but it does need a couple of committed people to ensure it does. We are happy to discuss the in’s and out’s of the work with any interested people. Both Brian Dunne and Chris Young have stated they will stay on and provide assistance on the committee so there’s a start.

We have really enjoyed running the tournament but we feel it is time to step aside and let someone with fresh eyes promote it further. We have made lots of new friends and all of those we shall keep close and enjoy meeting and perhaps playing with and against a little more in the future.

We look forward to many more enjoyable moments through bowls and wish our successors the very best of luck with the event.

Thank you all for being patient while the while we have been working on the new website. Special thanks to the lovely and very clever Vicky Lamburn who has been instrumental in bringing the site to life and working with me (Tony) to progress it. I can assure you Vicky has had to be so, so patient giving me an idea of how to do things and I thank her for that. She gave a lot of her own time to get to where we are and the Tournament are very grateful for all her help setting it up and the assistance she has promised for the future. Thank you Vicky! By way of background Vicky is “the” IT Officer for Worthing Borough Council and recently won a National award for her design of the WBC site. Thanks are also due to Worthing Borough Council and Continental Landscapes for their considerable assistance in re-aligning the tournament. Appreciation from all of us is similarly due to Mark Brown an IT graphical Artist with Worthing Borough Council who was of significant help in producing new posters, leaflets, entry forms etc. for the revamped tournament. Thank you Mark.

LATE BREAKING NEWS: The prize fund has been guaranteed at £5000.00 for the tournament subject to funding. This means all the competition prize monies from last year’s Mens Open Tournament have been raised. A NEW Tournament purse for Worthing’s newest Bowls Tournament.

We have been asked by Bowls England to retract the first sentence of the second paragraph of text on the entry form and qualify it with the following, "Once the two years of the company's incorporation has passed (July 2009) either the Counties shall become a Unified body and elect one Authorised Representative or the Board at their discretion may extend the period for the Counties to commence unification. The Board envisage that all Counties will at least have commenced the unification process within the two year period. After this two year period the Board foresee that communication will be channelled by email through one administrator per Geographical County and meeting costs will be paid accordingly. Whilst the Board have the discretion of extending the period for Counties to unify this cannot be made indefinite due to the fact that all agreed to form a company limited by guarantee for the purpose of unification."

The 1st May, 2009 and the entries are beginning to come in now at a steady trickle that will no doubt turn to a torrent as we near the closing date so don’t sit around thinking about it, make a positive decision to enter one, two, three or all the competitions and come and test your skill and maybe if you have a little bit of luck now and then! As you know 5000 entry forms have been sent out to clubs in all the English Counties south of Birmingham and we are hoping that word of mouth and this website will help to gather those who haven’t heard into the fold!
